Pergola and Pavilion FAQS

What is a Pergola?

A Pergola is an outdoor structure made up of vertical columns supporting a series of beams and joists that form the roof.  A pergola is designed to provide various amounts of shade depending on the roof structure selected.  Pergolas are typically free standing and open on all four sides, but they can be attached directly to another structure.   Materials used to create a pergola can include wood, metal, PVC or vinyl.

Pergolas are an elegant way to define your outdoor space.  Depending on the location of the pergola in relation to the sun and any existing structures, the amount of shade can be varied by selecting a simple joist roof to let more light in or a cross trellis roof for more shade.

 What is a Pavilion?

A pavilion is an outdoor structure made up of vertical columns supporting a series of beams and joists that form the roof.  Pavilions are typically free standing and open on all four sides, but they can be attached directly to another structure.   The major difference between a pavilion and pergola is that a pavilion typically has a solid roof while a pergola has an open grid roof that lets various amounts of light through.  With is’ solid roof, pavilions are a better choice if you want to use the structure when it is raining.   Pavilions can be constructed of wood, metal, PVC or vinyl.  The roof on a pavilion is typically either metal of plywood and shingles.

What Is the Difference between a Pergola vs a Pavilion?

Pergolas typically have an open roof while a pavilion has a solid roof.

How Much Shade Does a Pergola Provide?

The amount of shade that a pergola provides will depend on the type of roof system selected.  A simple joist roof lets more light through and provides less shade while a cross trellis roof system provides more share and less light.
